A “Tail” Of Two Poms
My husband Brian and I have two Pomeranians. I always find it funny how they are polar opposites. Oliver (otherwise known as Ollie Pup) is our first dog. He will be 5 in October and is almost exactly as old as our marriage! Scout turns 3 in November.
Here are just some of the ways they are opposites:
Cuddling: Ollie is what I like to call a “foot of the bed” dog, whereas Scout’s favorite place is cuddled up right next to her daddy. Ollie hides under the chair and generally wants to be left along when he’s sleepy.
Eating: Ollie chews each bite of his food and when he grabs a treat from you, he does it very carefully. Sometimes I wonder if Scout even chews at all?! We had to get her a slow feeder bowl so she wouldn’t eat so quickly that she threw up! We are also working with her on being gentle went taking treats from your hand.
Smarts: If Ollie does something once, he KNOWS he can do it again. He learns when to trust or not trust your intentions. If you “trick” him into doing something he doesn’t want to do, the next time you won’t be able to trick him! Sometimes he is too smart for his own good. Scout – on the other hand – you can trick her time and time again. She may not have the brains in the family, but she sure is loving and cute enough to make up for it! 🙂
What They Pay Attention To: Scout LOVES watching TV and looking out the window. She could do both for hours. She once watched pretty much the entire movie of Lassie. Ollie doesn’t seem to enjoy either of those things. When we are on walks, Scout notices every little thing that moves – whether it be a leaf, bird, squirrel, etc. Ollie doesn’t pay attention to any of those things. He is more focused on the big picture things. He’ll stop for 5 minutes to watch the river go by or stare up at the Arch.
Schedule: Ollie is the time keeper. He lives his life on a tight schedule. He knows when it is time to wake up, eat, etc. Scout doesn’t seem to notice time – she just lets Ollie take the lead and knows he will always make sure they get fed on time!
